I kind of thought this fruit bat looked like the Gimp character. What do you think? Photo taken by Jodi_B of Deviantart.

Gimp is a great program. I challenge anyone to name a better free image editor. That being said, it does lack the instructional support, a well established package like Photoshop possesses. There are instructional videos, classes, books and magazines dedicated to Adobe’s application. This is something a free open Read more

You can find lots of How To drawing tutorials Online, but aside from being wowed and inspired, you are left with very little instructional guidance.

This leads me to the question, are these videos truly tutorials? Many of them are usually set at high speeds, to accommodate time limits. And the only audio is music playing. You can’t really follow the techniques and the artist never says anything.

Now many of these videos are cool for what they are, (not tutorial) so don’t get upset if I’m talking about you or one of your favorite artists.
Rather than complain about it, I chose to create my own drawing series. My tutorials will start off with the very basic principles of drawing and build from there. I wanted this to be something a left brained person could pick up and feel comfortable with. Now I’m not a formal instructor as such, but I can teach you a few things if you are open minded. I’m always open to learning something new, so please share your insight with me. The most important thing is that we have fun as we take this art journey together.

It shared how we need to observe our target readers so we can communicate to them in more meaningful Read more

Quick and Easy E-book Covers in 3D

Apple has an app for reading e-books on your iPhone, Sony’s got a line of new portable digital readers, and apparently there is a device called the Kindle2 that you can read your e-books with. Honestly I didn’t know there was a Kindle1. If I didn’t know better I’d say these mega companies are betting on the increased sales of e-books and we need to take notice. For anyone interested in writing a book now may be the best time to make it happen.
I recently did a video tutorial showing how to layout a e-book cover design in Microsoft Expression. As a follow up, I want to take you through the steps of turning that 2D art into a 3D book using Gimp. After watching this video you’ll Read more
