chick 300x216 6 Answers to Designing on a ShoestringIf you ever wondered how you could get something design related done as inexpensively as possible, maybe one of these tips is the answer to your prayers.

Let me remind you that cheap or free is not always the best way to go. You are either going to spend your money or your time getting things done right. If you find that you have more time on your hands than money in the bank, then cheap/free may be your best option.

  1. Consider using local blueprint shops for large format printing as a alternative to Kinkos. Unlike Kinkos, a blueprint shop may not have a standardized price sheet for projects like yours, so you may be able to negotiate a deal.
  2. After downloading all those cool fonts from Dafont.com, you’ll need a font management application like FontXplorer (mac) or FontLoader-Shell tools (PC). And yes, they’re both free. Note: Check Dafont.com for terms of use before downloading fonts.
  3. Use design templates from http://www.stocklayouts.com/Default.aspx and save on the cost of using a design firm for a simple brochure.
  4. Need art? Try Openclipart.org. Just keep in mind, this art is available for free to everyone, so you might want to tweak your clipart to standout from the crowd.
  5. Looking for the perfect picture? Try Everystockphoto.com. Again, check the terms of use for both everystockphoto.com and openclipart.org before downloading.
  6. Invest $25 and pick up, “The Non-Designers Design Book” by Robin Williams. No, not the comedian. It will keep your designs on the straight and narrow.
